Leonard, what do you appreciate about studying economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen?

The bachelor’s programme taught me the fundamentals of the subject, self-organisation and systematic thinking. In the Master’s programme, I particularly appreciate the dialogue with the lecturers – they provide a lot of input and engage in discussions with us on an equal footing: How do I structure and manage projects, how do I monitor performance indicators, how do I market products? I notice that I can now actively apply what I have learned, not only within my Master’s programme.

Where exactly is your knowledge applied?

Together with fellow students, I founded a start-up. We manufacture and install solar awnings for outdoor dining areas and private individuals. Without the knowledge I gained during my studies and the opportunities offered by the university, this would not have been possible. At the same time, however, I realise that I have to be very focused in order to combine my studies and the start-up: Important deadlines for setting up the business coincided with the exam period, and another employment contract had not yet expired. Fortunately, there are various scholarships available here that provide a real boost.

But many of the university’s services have also been very helpful. I made my first contacts with companies and the start-up scene during my time at act e.V., the student consultancy in Essen. As our idea slowly took shape, we received support from GUIDE, the Centre for Start-ups and Innopreneurship at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Last year, we came third in the Startup Olympics, a project that is also supported by the university.

What else did you take away from UDE?

I have found a strategy that helps me learn efficiently: digital flashcards. Writing things down helps me memorise concepts. When I’m on the go, I can access them anytime on my smartphone. At home, I read them aloud to myself.

At UDE, I have met people who support each other. And most importantly, I have grown as a person here.

What does this development mean to you? What tips do you have?

Set yourself goals! Be keen to prove to yourself that you can study this! And: Find out why you procrastinate, because this is often a sign that you feel uncomfortable because you don’t understand everything yet. But that’s totally normal, because how can you understand something you haven’t fully grasped yet? So embrace the learning process and tell yourself: At the end of the semester, I’ll be better than before!
